Canned wine? Worse! Wine 0% alc. in cans! But you’re crazy! Welcome to Cypher ;)
The aim is not to replace the traditional bottle of wine, but rather to introduce an alternative format for different drinking occasions. The can offers a more casual, practical and simple option.
Traditionally, wine is packaged in two types of container: the bottle and the BIB (Bag In Box). The BIB is practical because it can be drunk by the glass, but it’s not ideal in the context of reducing plastic pollution. That’s why we chose the can format.
The can is lighter and easier to transport than small bottles of wine or BIBs, which also makes it more environmentally friendly. What’s more, consuming wine in cans helps to reduce the waste associated with opened bottles that are not fully consumed.
Although the market for cans is firmly established in the United States, it is still developing in Europe. Nevertheless, countries such as Germany and the UK are beginning to adopt this format more and more.
At Cypher, after careful consideration, we concluded that cans were in line with our ecological values, while at the same time responding perfectly to the needs of on-the-go consumers.
This format offers the opportunity to broaden the occasions on which wine can be enjoyed.
Imagine enjoying cans of wine on a picnic, at outdoor events, festivals or even during a day out on a boat: the possibilities are endless!
One of the main advantages of the can is that it allows you to enjoy a good wine, perfectly preserved, in a more environmentally-friendly package than glass bottles.
The choice of aluminium as the main material for our cans was a clear decision, motivated by its properties.
All our cans are made from recycled aluminium and carry a water-soluble label made from recycled paper.
We opted for aluminium because it is lighter and its packaging is more compact than that of glass bottles. What’s more, aluminium has a lower environmental impact than glass.
Recycling a tonne of aluminium saves 96% of energy, whereas recycling glass saves only 26.5%.
An empty 25cl can weighs just 15 grams, compared with 390 grams for a 75cl bottle. For an equivalent quantity of wine, the can format reduces the weight of packaging by more than 85%. In concrete terms, 75 cl of wine in cans weighs 45 grams of aluminium, compared with 390 grams of glass for a bottle.
By lightening the weight of our products, we reduce the CO2 emissions associated with transporting them.
Recycling a can requires 95% less energy than manufacturing it from raw materials. In terms of environmental impact, it is often overlooked that recycling one tonne of aluminium avoids the emission of 7.5 tonnes of CO2 that would have been produced during the initial manufacturing process.
This significant reduction in emissions also helps to reduce the environmental impact on ecosystems and local communities in production regions, improving their quality of life.
In France, almost 50% of the aluminium produced comes from recycled raw materials. More than 75% of the aluminium produced in France is still in use, which means that it cannot be recycled. Another obstacle is the lack of awareness about the management of household aluminium waste. There are two types:
- Rigid packaging: such as cans and gas cylinders
- Flexible packaging: such as aluminium foil, meal trays, etc.
This type of packaging accounts for 2% of household waste in France, so it’s essential to sort it properly. By putting your aluminium waste in the yellow bin, it can be recycled.

“It’s a really nice surprise, because it’s a really delicate Sauvignon Blanc, with mineral notes that develop into fruit notes: citrus fruit, lime and also pear. It’s a very delicate wine. On the palate, it has the freshness of Sauvignon but above all a lingering finish that stays on the palate. That’s what you’d expect from a quality wine that can accompany you from the aperitif to dinner, with a fine fish or other more gourmet dishes, for example.
